The destination address should ideally be displayed in the SYN packet, for safety and to avoid the possibility of having an open connection to the proxy server, but not the final destination.

Diagnosis: VMware bug. Automatic VMware Tools installation very kindly ejects the live CD so it can insert its own, and then wonders why it’s not working. Sigh.

Actually it was simpler than that: for some reason the virtual CD virtually ejected, or something, and everything was emitting I/O errors. A reboot fixed it!

@Anil: I’m seeing really weird but mundane problems, e.g. as soon as I ask Gnome to do anything (like open an Applications submenu, or bring up the Run dialog) it crashes and restarts the desktop environment. This makes it hard to achieve anything useful. I’ve only tried it for 10 minutes though; will attempt more debugging if I get bored on the train back.

Great trip report! What errors are you seeing with the Ubuntu LiveCD under VMWare? I’d quite like to configure it as a middlebox VM (e.g. to put in front of a CIEL master process) so it can proxy TCP flows from uni->multipath.
